Type 2 Diabetes A Rapidly Growing Epidemic Essay

Type 2 diabetes is a rapidly growing epidemic that New Zealand is facing, and trying hard to overcome. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease and is caused by the body becoming insulin resistant or no longer producing enough insulin, although there is no exact reasoning as to why this happens it is highly suggestive that an overabundance of weight and indolence plays a part. It is stated that an individual who is obese is at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In 2013 alone, there was an estimated 240,000 New Zealanders who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes; a further 100,000 were estimated to have diabetes unknowingly. Numbers are only expected to rise. There are numerous other complications that diabetes is partly chargeable i.e, the risk of cardiovascular disease, nerve damage and kidney failure. In 2010 alone, there were 768 fatal cases due to diabetes. (Presumably Type 2) In december of 2014 the DHB created a statistics chart on estimated diagnosed cases of diabetes. The results for Auckland showed that Pacific people have 6,092 with diagnosed diabetes, Maori having the least amount at 1,945 (Indian; 4,304. European/other, 5,196) A total of 27, 537 in Auckland alone. Across New Zealand, it was estimated that European/other are the most common for diabetes with a whopping 174,689 cases of diagnosed diabetes, Maori coming second with 37,159 diagnosed cases, Pacific People at 30,533 cases and lastly Indians with a diagnosed number of 15,395.
